SummaryThe Central Texas Health Care System is recruiting for a highly qualified Lead Medical Technician for our Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service located in Austin, Texas. Learn more about this agency ResponsibilitiesThe primary purpose of this position is to perform in the capacity as a nonsupervisory Lead Medical Technician. The incumbent will be responsible for both routine and specialized work; evaluates, interprets, correlates and validates the accuracy of laboratory procedures and results. Work is performed in a variety of laboratory disciplines; i.e., phlebotomy, reference laboratory specimens, hematology, coagulation, chemistry, limited microbiology and urinalysis. Major duties include but are not limited to:Performs venipuncture and ensures safe and non-traumatic processes are used with critical concern for the blood donor and for the quality of the specimen while using standard aseptic procedures and safeguards.Recognizes indication of instrument malfunction and acts appropriately to remedy the problem using acquired expertise and proper troubleshooting techniques.Calibrates, standardizes, and maintains equipment and instruments insuring proper operation and accurate patient result output.Ensures two patient identifiers and active communication are used with each blood draw and specimen collection.Directs patients in proper methods to use in collecting sterile, clean catch and 24-hour urine specimens.Selects, performs, evaluates and monitors the performance of test procedures both manually and on testing equipment.Consistently communicates and treats customers (Veterans, their representatives, visitors and VA staff) in a courteous, tactful and respectful manner.Contacts special reference and commercial laboratories for information regarding the performance of specific tests, or for the results of referred tests.Responsible for proper packing, labeling, addressing, shipping and logging of specimens referred to other laboratories for testing, including etiologic agents for interstate commerce, following all transportation regulations.Provides for development, implementation and evaluation of regulatory and accrediting agency standards and trains staff regarding compliance requirements.Records information pertaining to the storage of specimens and supplies and completes appropriate tracking/inventory system information.Enters results of tests performed into computer data bank via computer terminal or LIS interface.Performs computerized accessioning of patient specimens.Assists supervisors with scheduling and verifying employee attendance.Analyzes and assists in evaluating the performance of phlebotomy staff.Conducts inventory of specimen collection equipment and supplies.Orders specimen collection supplies and equipment and coordinates delivery.Trains staff in phlebotomy technique, safety policies and universal precautions. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings OR (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. OR,Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to l year of specialized experience. OR,Combining Experience and Education: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience are also qualifying.Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.Physical Requirements: Light lifting (under 15 pounds); moderate carrying (15-44 pounds); pushing (4 hours); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; walking (4 hours); standing (4 hours); kneeling (2 hours); repeated bending (4 hours); both legs required; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; both eye required; depth perception; ability to distinguish basic colors; ability to distinguish shades of of colors; hearing (aid permitted); far vision correctable in one eye to 20/50 and to 20/100 in the other; mental and emotional stability required.The work requires extensive and recurring physical exertion such as standing for long periods of time, bending, walking, stooping, sitting, and stretching. The incumbent must have the digital dexterity and adequate vision to perform safe venipuncture procedures. Lifting will not exceed a weight of 10 pounds.
