Job Description:
Primary Purpose:
Provide visionary leadership in learning resources and
instructional support to work with students, faculties, families
and communities. Provide all students and faculty with an enriched
library environment containing a wide variety and range of
materials that will invite intellectual growth, promote literacy
and technology integration into the teaching and learning process.
Provide services and resources that allow students opportunities to
develop skills in locating, evaluating, synthesizing and using
information to solve problems.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education/Certification
Valid Texas librarian certification or be actively enrolled in an
accredited university program with a minimum of six (6) completed
hours
Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting
background check. Non-refundable fee (approximately $50) paid by
employee.
Bililngual preferred
Required Experience:
Three (3) years teaching experience
Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of current library practices
Strong organization, communication, and interpersonal skills
Competence in use of current library technology
Demonstrated commitment to professional growth and learning

Code to provide rules for standard practices and ethical conduct
toward students, professional colleagues, school officials,
parents, and members of the community.

Organization Management
The librarian manages administrative, fiscal, and facilities
functions responsibly through activities such as the following:
- Processes and arranges resources according to standard library
practices.
- Creates and maintains a balanced collection of information
resources by using standard selection tools, consultation with
students and faculty, as well as collection and curriculum
analysis.
- Manages the use, distribution, maintenance, and inventory of
library media center resources and equipment.
- Coordinates the acquisition and use of instructional materials
from outside sources, such as Education Service Center,
instructional television, and other schools.
- Provides fair and equitable access to library facilities and
resources through appropriate scheduling.
- Develops and administers library budget according to priorities
of the instructional program, established guidelines and district
business practices.
- Maintains systematic records and data as well as compile
periodic reports to facilitate program evaluation.
- Acquires, organizes, and manages information for use in a
creative and exemplary library program.
- Advocates access to resources and information during and beyond
the instructional day and school year.
- Creates a library environment that is conducive to learning and
appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
- Coordinates and manages all activities pertaining to the
library such as author visits, book fairs, or specific literacy
programming, etc.
- Works collaboratively with district administration and other
librarians in the district to ensure an aligned K-12 library
program through attendance and participation in library
meetings.
- Performs ongoing collection development and withdrawal of
library materials in accordance with DVISD policies.
- Manages the acquisition, processing, organization,
distribution, maintenance, and inventory of all campus library
resources.
- Conducts annual library inventory; compile and submit annual
data for campus library report to campus principal.
Instructional Management
The librarian promotes improvement of instruction through
activities such as the following:
- Promotes the integration of curriculum, resources, and teaching
strategies, particularly as it relates to the integration of
information literacy, inquiry, technology and the TEKS.
- Plan, teach, and evaluate instruction in information
skills.
- Works with teachers to incorporate information skill
instruction into the school's curriculum.
- Provides teachers with assistance in selecting, locating, and
using information resources and instructional materials.
- Provides leadership, instruction, and consulting assistance in
the use of instructional and information technology.
- Participates in curriculum development and assessment on a
regular basis.
- Coordinates campus level reading promotion programs and
activities.
- Collaborates with teachers to integrate information
problem-solving skills into subject areas and team teach as
appropriate.
Student Growth and Development
The librarian fosters student growth and development through
activities such as the following:
- Supports and provides guidance in the DVISD Responsible Use
guidelines for media use.
- Provides learning opportunities for users on the availability
of library resources and Fair Use/Copyright information as
needed.
- Provides individual assistance to students in identifying,
selecting, and interpreting information.
- Promotes appreciation and understanding of literature and
reading.
- Creates an environment that is conducive to the learning needs
of individuals and groups.
Communication and Community Relations
The librarian promotes a positive tone for school or community
relations through activities such as the following:
- Collaborates with families and community members.
- Responds to diverse community interests and needs.
- Fosters the use of community resources and collaboration.
- Communicates effectively with colleagues, students, parents,
and supervisors maintaining a positive and helpful
relationship.
Professional Growth and Development
The librarian participates in professional growth and development
through activities such as the following:
- Participates in national and state level organizations to stay
abreast of latest research and best practices.
- Attends professional development opportunities related to
designated subject area.
- Reads, synthesizes, and disseminates research and information
related to best practices from books, journals, listservs,
websites, and other media formats.
- Participates in staff development, meetings, and other
activities to improve job-related skills.
- Ability to develop and deliver campus training/staff
development sessions.
Qualities of Effective Librarians
The librarian exhibits qualities such as the following:
- Interacts with students in a consistent, fair, and positive
manner.
- Keeps informed of and comply with federal, state, district, and
school regulations and policies for libraries and librarians.
- Corrects unsafe conditions in work area that could cause an
accident and inform principal of any conditions that are not
correctable immediately.
- Complies with the standards of conduct set out in Board Policy
DH (Legal) and (Local) and with any other policies, regulations,
and guidelines that impose duties, requirements, and
standards.
- Performs any other duties as assigned by the
administration.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Supervises assigned paraprofessionals, student assistants, and
volunteer(s).
Equipment:
Computer, computer software programs and peripherals, teacher
resource materials and equipment, audiovisual equipment, printer,
copier, fax and other equipment applicable to the position.
Working Conditions:
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors
- Maintains emotional control under stress.
- Works with frequent interruptions.
- Works irregular hour and extended work hours to include
holidays and weekends.
- Frequent walking, standing, stooping, bending, pulling and
pushing.
- Occasional light lifting and carrying (15-44 pounds); may lift
and move text books and classroom equipment.
- May be required under specific circumstances to provide
physical restraint of students in danger of causing harm to
themselves or others.
- Occasional district wide and statewide travel.
- Use computer for prolonged period resulting in repetitive hand
motion.
- Frequent exposure to: temperature extremes (hot and cold),
humidity extremes, noise, low or intense illumination
vibration.
- Occasional exposure to: biological hazards (communicable
diseases, bacteria, etc.), work outside, work around moving objects
or vehicles, work on uneven surfaces.
