Premium Product System Design Lead 172204
The Role
Looking for an innovative problem solver and technical leader responsible for developing and driving AMD thermal, power, and performance solutions into premium class mobile and desktop products. This role will work to drive best in class OEM solutions for premium user experience through leadership in battery life, performance, and system ergonomics. This is a high impact, high visibility role responsible for defining and building the process and leading the cross functional team to win in the premium mobile market segment.
The Person
As the system thermal and performance customer product lead, candidate should have a strong background in at least of 2 of 3 key skills: thermal design, power management, and performance attainment. Daily skills are focused on mobile computer systems, new product development process, computer system architecture, design for cost, and consumer product ergonomic and acoustic standards.
Key Responsibilities

  • Lead thermal, power, and performance architecture and development of select "premium" products, driving OEM system customization and optimization of internally developed system level features and operation. Drive and communicate progress to plans and performance objectives with both AMD leadership team and OEM customer teams.
  • Define and integrate requirements for internal design, performance, and product characterization efforts as it relates to OEM system and commercial customer needs
  • Directly interface with OEM/ODM customer thermal, mechanical, power and performance design teams, providing product projections, validation support, design assistance and product training
  • Identify and drive closure to competitive gaps in power, performance, and thermal features, capabilities, process, and tools in collaboration with advance teams on select premium product engagements.
  • Work with the SOC architects to set system power and performance attainment objectives and methods to improve projection accuracies
  • Lead and influence customers with performance and battery life projections based for those premium system designs based on components, thermals variables, and power considerations to hit both AMD and OEM goals.
  • Support the system performance/watt assessments & attainments for a given Client APU/CPU product with continuous test, debug, analysis, & defect resolution throughout the course of a project
  • Collaborate across system design and architecture teams to balance system layout requirements for mechanical, thermal, board design, and key component placement.
  • Lead and support early customer engagement model to include Proof Of Concept vehicle development for new AMD power and performance features.
  • Technically interface with all internal functions required to enable and optimize power management for Client APU/CPU products
  • Develop strong partnerships with program stakeholders across the organization and development partners
    Preferred Experience
    • Strong background in design, optimization, and tuning of mobile computing products.
    • Detailed understanding of PC system architecture, mobile system mechanical, board design, and power delivery.
    • Depth and expertise in thermal, power and performance tradeoffs and resulting impacts to delivered product competitiveness and user experiences
    • Experience with design for ergonomics - skin temperature, acoustic, performance and battery life optimization
    • Experience in the PC architecture space and familiarity with hands-on system setup & testing.
    • Direct technical experience on APU/CPU system performance analysis and micro-architectural power management.
    • Understand CPU and GPU architecture and thermal controls for APU/CPU, GPU, and combinations of these.
    • Knowledge of Firmware controlled system power and thermal management requirements and features.
    • Experience with system layout optimization, chassis design, and thermal solution sizing to meet performance and sizing requirements.
    • Must have deep knowledge of all key system thermal components and new technologies including fans, heatsinks, shielding, spreaders, Thermal Interface Materials.
    • Depth of system knowledge of all key components and sub-systems which impact thermals (VRAM, NVME, VR, Memory, Charging circuit, etc).
    • Understand power, performance, and thermal issues and interactions at system level. Able to quickly identify issues and drive alternate solutions.
    • Effective with communication and building respect while communicating status to executive level audience
      Academic Credentials
      • Bachelor's Degree (BS) in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or other relevant discipline plus a minimum of 7 years' experience in computer system thermal/power/performance design, or with Master's degree and 5+ years' experience
