Job Summary and Qualifications
The Enterstomal, Wound & Ostomy Nurse will
utilize the nursing process to develop a comprehensive wound care
program, based upon assessed needs. You will provide guidance and
educational programs to all staff. You will work autonomously, sets
priorities and makes independent decisions of a complex nature. You
will interface directly with the public, physicians, staff,
patients, administration and ancillary/support department
representatives. You will maintain confidentiality of patients’

selected nursing students to the role of Wound & ostomy
- You will develops and evaluate a formulary
of wound/ostomy/continence care products for the
- You will serve as a consultant to
patients/families, nursing staff, physicians and other health care
- You will develop policies and procedures for
the wound & ostomy specialty area.
- You will facilitate cost containment
measures through product cost versus effectiveness
- You will ensure complete and thorough
wound-ostomy assessments are performed and documented using the
nursing process at the time of the referral, and as needed, based
on patient condition and Hospital policy. You will ensure patient
care is delivered in accordance with assessed needs.
- You will ensure the plan for care, including
discharge planning, are written on all assigned
- You will ensure documentation is consistent,
complete, thorough and legible. Documentation includes the outcome
of Wound and Ostomy nursing interventions and patient
- You will ensure physician orders are carried
out accurately in providing direct patient care. You will assure
that other departments are notified of orders and services, as
- You will accept only physician’s verbal or
telephone orders in accordance with practice guidelines and ensure
orders are written accurately to include date, time and physician
- You will notify the Charge Nurse, Primary
Nurse and physician of changes of patient status as
- You will maintain competencies required by

nursing by participating in professional

knowledge of wound and ostomy specialty through community

other invasive procedures.
Registered Nurse license by
the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners. If compact license held, RN is
required to obtain a Texas RN license within 90 days of their hire
BLS required per St. David’s policy.
Certification in Wound Care obtained from the American
Heart Association,and Ostomy Care within 12 months of
St. David’s South Austin Medical Center is an
acute-care facility in central Texas with more than 300 patient
beds. The hospital is known in the community for its nationally
accredited oncology program – the Sarah Cannon Blood Cancer Center,
home to the area’s only adult bone marrow
transplant program – and Level II trauma center. The facility’s
full range of
specialized services includes cardiovascular care and
rehabilitation, imaging services, women’s services, joint
replacement and orthopedics, surgical services including weight
loss surgery, wound care, emergency care, cancer care, nutrition
services, and a sleep disorder center. The hospital operates three
full-service emergency centers.
