Job Summary and Qualifications

The Enterstomal, Wound & Ostomy Nurse will utilize the nursing process to develop a comprehensive wound care program, based upon assessed needs. You will provide guidance and educational programs to all staff. You will work autonomously, sets priorities and makes independent decisions of a complex nature. You will interface directly with the public, physicians, staff, patients, administration and ancillary/support department representatives. You will maintain confidentiality of patients’ medical record.

  • You will orient new nursing personnel and selected nursing students to the role of Wound & ostomy nurse.
  • You will develops and evaluate a formulary of wound/ostomy/continence care products for the facility.
  • You will serve as a consultant to patients/families, nursing staff, physicians and other health care team members.
  • You will develop policies and procedures for the wound & ostomy specialty area.
  • You will facilitate cost containment measures through product cost versus effectiveness analysis.
  • You will ensure complete and thorough wound-ostomy assessments are performed and documented using the nursing process at the time of the referral, and as needed, based on patient condition and Hospital policy. You will ensure patient care is delivered in accordance with assessed needs.
  • You will ensure the plan for care, including discharge planning, are written on all assigned patients. 
  • You will ensure documentation is consistent, complete, thorough and legible. Documentation includes the outcome of Wound and Ostomy nursing interventions and patient responses.
  • You will ensure physician orders are carried out accurately in providing direct patient care. You will assure that other departments are notified of orders and services, as needed.
  • You will accept only physician’s verbal or telephone orders in accordance with practice guidelines and ensure orders are written accurately to include date, time and physician giving order.
  • You will notify the Charge Nurse, Primary Nurse and physician of changes of patient status as appropriate.
  • You will maintain competencies required by Hospital and position. Maintains expertise in wound and ostomy nursing by participating in professional programs/organizations.
  • You will facilitate intra-community knowledge of wound and ostomy specialty through community programs.
  • You will prepare patients for surgical and other invasive procedures. 


  • 1 year of nursing experience in the area of expertise or "in an acute care facility

  • Two years Med Surg Clinical Experience/prefer background in Wound Care: Preferred 


  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing: Required

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing: Preferred


  • Registered Nurse license by the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners. If compact license held, RN is required to obtain a Texas RN license within 90 days of their hire date.

  • BLS required per St. David’s policy.

  • Certification in Wound Care obtained from the American Heart Association,and Ostomy Care within 12 months of employment.
