Description SHIFT: Evenings (rotating weekends)

SCHEDULE: Full-time

Located in central Austin, St. David---s Medical Center includes a 350-bed acute care hospital and a 64- bed rehabilitation hospital providing comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care. We would love to talk to you about this fantastic opportunity.-- POSITION SUMMARYResponsible for competently handling and processing all laboratory specimens, ensuring specimen integrity by adhering to laboratory procedures.-- Serves as a resource for specimen and testing information.-- Accurately obtains blood samples via venipuncture and capillary collection procedures with minimum customer discomfort.-- Adheres to departmental policies and procedures to include departmental programs, quality control, performance improvement and safety.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES--1. Accurately handles and processes specimens.-- Performs accurate venipuncture and capillaryblood collection.-Collects and processes requested tests (High Risk/LowVolume)
-Identifies proper tubes, containers, transport media andstorage temperature for each test type--(High Risk/High Volume)
-Determines specimen acceptability, consulting with SectionSupervisor, Technologist or Pathologist as needed taking appropriate actionwhen necessary (High Risk/High Volume)
-Ensures adequate supply of applicable forms for specimenhandling
-Prioritizes collection process (High Risk/Low Volume)
-Identifies patient and properly labels specimens (HighRisk/High Volume)
-Follows appropriate guidelines as established by thelaboratory for missed draws, recollects or difficult sticks (High Risk/LowVolume)
2. Ensures quality of laboratory services -Answers inquiries for test information, patient results andbasic customer related issues (High Risk/High Volume)-Follows laboratory procedures for specimen collection andhandling, ensuring proper requisition accompanies the specimen (High Risk/HighVolume)-Serves as primary resources for referral testing informationacting as a resource person to resolve problems with referral testinglaboratories-Follows all safety, infection control and OSHA Blood BornePathogen guidelines (High Risk/ High Volume)-Participates in departmental performance improvementprograms-Participates in the laboratory continuing education program-Participates and utilizes FOCUS PDCA tools to address interand intra-departmental issues (i.e. Modular Training, Process ImprovementTeams, etc.)
3. Utilizes departmental resources in an efficient manner-Demonstrates efficiency by performing procedures rapidly anddetermining priority-Utilizes appropriate supplies with minimal waste-Operates equipment to maximize efficiency and minimizedowntime (High Risk/High Volume)
4.
