St. Davids North Austin Medical Center is part of St. Davids HealthCare, one of the largest health systems in Texas, which was recognized with a Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in 2014. The 378-bed multi-specialty, acute care facility is dedicated to the highest level of womens health services, including maternity and newborn care with Level I, II and III nurseries at the adjacent St. Davids Womens Center of Texas. The facility also features a 24-hour emergency department, the Texas Institute for Robotic Surgery, the Bariatric Center, heart and vascular center, neurology and neurosurgery, a kidney transplant program, inpatient and outpatient surgery, and acute inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, among many others. St. Davids North Austin Medical Center is also home to St. Davids Childrens Hospital. In 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2016, the hospital earned a national distinction for patient safety from The Leapfrog Group.The Patient Care Technician performs a variety of basic care services related to activities of daily living under the direct supervision of a registered nurse (RN) and/or licensed vocational nurse (LVN). The Patient Care Technician assists the nursing staff in providing patient care according to hospital policies and procedures. The Patient Care Technician accepts assignments on other units when necessary. The Patient Care Technician assists in maintaining a clean, well organized and adequately stocked patient care unit. Treats colleagues, customers, patients and families with respect, loyalty and dignity. Roles may differ on specific units or facilities based upon needs of department. Participates in providing patient specific care standards as directed, and follows service excellence standards to ensure high levels of patient satisfaction. ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES Participates in providing direct care as directed, according to standards Can work with people from diverse socio-economic backgrounds Communicates all findings in the correct/concise/clear written and or verbal formatCan recognize abnormal findings i.e. VS, Skin changes, I&O, etc. and report findings to the nurseCan recognize and respond appropriately in an emergency situationApplies knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span to identify patient and family requirements relative to age-specific needsFunctions as a sitter, when appropriateCan perform skills to support direct careCan organize, set priorities and manage multiple prioritiesCan adjust to a rapidly changing work environmentCan maintain a clean, well organized and adequately stocked patient care areaMaintains equipment in good working orderSubmits requests for repair appropriatelyUses and charges supplies appropriatelyCan input physician orders, as appropriateCan operate the patient call systemAnswers and transfers phone calls. Break down and/or copies charts/forms as neededActs as preceptor for new, floating and cross-training PCTsHave knowledge of limited role of medication security, handling, storage and transport of non-narcotic medications under the approval and direction of a supervisorPhlebotomy for lab specimens, blood culturesFoley catheter care and removal.Nasal swabsAssists with surgical aseptic/sterile procedures maintaining sterile/aseptic techniqueAssist with set up of equipment as neededSitting Duties, as appropriate (for suicidal and non-suicidal patients)Maintains visual contact with the patient at all timesNever leaves the patient unattended even when patient has visitors. Sitter must remain Never leaves patient in bathroom alone, especially suicidal patientsPatient may not leave the floor except for diagnostic procedures and will be accompanied by the sitter at all timesChecks the patient room for unsafe items such as razor blades, matches, cigarette lighters, glass receptacles, metal eating utensils, etc, at the beginning of each shift and after any visitors have been presentCollects meal utensils after each meal and removes from roomCommunicates patient behavior or statements referencing harm to nurseUses the call light or phone for any assistance. Pulls the call light out of the socket or uses emergency call light in an emergencyDocuments observations at least every 15 minutes or more often if heightened observation levelIs familiar with the plan of careCan follow instructions for the care performedCommunicates to the nurse any data appropriate to the plan of careProvides meaningful input to the evaluationCommunicates information to RN and LVN for evaluation of patient care
