Description The Bipolar Disorder Center at the Mulva Clinic for Neurosciences at Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin is seeking exceptional physician to join the Department of Psychiatry clinician-investigator focused on bipolar disorder clinical care and research. Made possible by an unprecedented partnership with the people of Austin and Travis County, and the generosity of the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation, the Dell Medical School is the first in nearly 50 years to be built from the ground up at a top tier Association of American Universities (AAU) research university. Through the generosity of the Mulva Family Foundation, the Mulva Neuroscience Clinics was established to advance neuroscience at The University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School. The Mulva Clinics combines state-of-the-art research with advanced clinical operations using Integrated Practice Units model (IPUs) to deliver and refine value-driven health care for patients. The Bipolar Disorder Center at the Mulva Clinic for Neurosciences provides specialized, coordinated and competitive out patient-centered team care that is evidence-based and outcome driven to achieve higher healthcare value with the lowest cost. The clinical program at the Bipolar Disorder Center highly intersects with an active bipolar disorder research program in the department of psychiatry. Job Summary Bipolar disorder remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the US, and improving bipolar disorder outcomes is an important focus for DMS. The clinician-investigator position will involve 20 hours/week of outpatient clinical work in the Bipolar Disorder Center and 20 hours/week focused on developing a successful tenure-track research career that will progress from early career development through to independent funding. DMS will provide start-up funding, mentorship, and shared resources to ensure the greatest opportunity for advancement as a clinician-investigator. The clinician will work closely with the Bipolar Disorder Center clinical team, and includes consultation, initial evaluation and follow-up treatment of individuals with bipolar disorder and related complex comorbid disorders. Depending on leadership skills, the candidate may progress to a leadership position. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Provide high-quality clinical care and clinical teaching. Participate in bipolar disorder research, including the development of grant proposals, conduction of health services research, and dissemination of new learning and innovations. Publish work in high-impact journals. Present work at national and international meetings, work with care providers and health care delivery networks to implement research in practice. Mentor or collaborate with other researchers or researchers in training, including graduate students. The position will include opportunities for teaching medical students, post-doctoral fellows and other trainees. Work collaboratively with Dell Medical School leadership, medical directors, physician providers and other clinical staff to develop excellence in service and clinical care, optimal outcomes, and efficient resource utilization; Serve as a clinical content expert of bipolar disorder at the Mulva Clinic of the Neurosciences evidence-based care delivery and redesign initiatives. Participate in strategic planning and other efforts directly tied to the development and growth of the Bipolar Disorder Center at the Mulva Clinic of the Neurosciences Assist in the creation of infrastructure for bipolar disorder care within the framework of value-based and patient-centered care Develop partnerships with referring physicians, hospitals, and ancillary providers in Austin and Central Texas. Train and mentor students, residents and fellows on new models of care and clinical practice. Develop and foster an atmosphere of scientific and academic inquiry in conjunction with trainees and researchers within the multidisciplinary team Collaborate with other schools at The University of Texas at Austin and across The University of Texas system on multidisciplinary, value-based care models Actively participate in the respective academic department of the candidate and abide by all required Departmental policies. Qualifications Medical degree (MD) in Psychiatry from an accredited university program. Combined MD and PhD degrees is preferred. Certified in psychiatry in Texas or eligible to be certified. A track record of significant psychiatric research. Knowledge of state and federal regulations and licensing requirements for ambulatory facilities strongly preferred. Clinical management and knowledge of budget, billing, finance and managed care rules and regulations preferred. Eligible for a faculty appointment in the Department of Psychiatry, Dell Medical School. The candidate must have a proven track record of research funding. interdisciplinary and translational neuroimaging or genetics research in bipolar disorder is a plus. Specific knowledge, skills, and abilities: Must possess the ability to communicate with others in a clear, understandable and professional manner on the phone and in person; and the demonstrated use of good written and verbal communication skills Must possess effective project management skills, including the ability to plan, organize and schedule work in an efficient and productive manner, focusing on key priorities and meeting deadlines. Must possess the ability to interact with peers, executives, patient families and other vendors in a manner that represents the Dell Medical School positively Ability to build and lead high-performing teams; must be able to provide clear and accurate direction and guidance. Must exhibit sound judgment in decision-making Must possess the ability to maintain regular, reliable and punctual attendance Must possess the ability to learn and apply new information, knowledge and experiences in a timely manner Must possess the ability to be flexible and adaptable to change Must possess the ability to work on multiple tasks and projects and to prioritize Must possess effective organizational skills and attention to detail; effective follow-through, and commitment to excellence The faculty member will be expected to provide service to the college, the university and the broader professional community.
