Job Description:

St. Davids South Austin Medical Center is part of St. Davids HealthCare, one of the largest health systems in Texas, which was recognized with a Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in 2014. St. David's South Austin Medical Center is an acute care facility with 316 beds, offering a range of complex specialties and sub-specialties, including a nationally accredited oncology program with the areas only adult bone marrow transplant program; a trauma program that includes all of the capabilities and programmatic elements of a Level II trauma center to treat the most severely injured and critical patients; a comprehensive cardiac program; full-service maternity and newborn care with Level I and II nurseries; and two full-service emergency centers in the communities of Bee Cave and Bastrop. South Austin Medical Centers Womens Services department is divided into 4 areas, L&D, Couplet Care, Level I Nursery and Level II NICU. L&D is comprised of 9 Labor, Deliver, and Recovery rooms (LDRs), 5 antepartum rooms, 3 operating rooms, and a 4 bed OBED. Care is provided to a variety of pregnancy related conditions including surveillance of fetal and maternal well-being by uterine and fetal monitoring, spontaneous labor and delivery, vaginal birth after a C Section (VBAC), induction and augmentation of labor, pre-term labor management, pre-eclampsia management, multiple gestation management, C Section, tubal ligation, dilation and curettage (D&C), and emergency hysterectomies. NICU a 9 bed Level II NICU provides specialized total care and continuing observation to newborns 32 to 42 weeks gestation utilizing age specific considerations. 2N Mother/Baby Unit, which provides modified total care to obstetrical, gynecological and other womens health medical or surgical patients. This is a 25-bed unit serving adolescent to geriatric women. The care model at SAMC is Couplet care from birth to discharge for all uncomplicated deliveries. Labor nurses do joint recovery care for patients with assistance from Nursery Admit nurses and in conjunction with Newborn nursery nurses who assist with babies who need extra care or monitoring. Babies room-in with their mothers with the ability to observe babies in the nursery if mom needs time to rest or if baby needs a procedure or observation. Position Description Attends deliveries as appropriate and performs neonatal stabilization and admission assessment of the newborn as appropriate. Performs patient assessments/reassessments on a regular basis in accordance with established policy to include the following: The priority of data collection is determined by the infants immediate condition or needs. Pertinent data is collected using appropriate assessment techniques. Data collection involves the infant, significant others, and health care providers when appropriate. The data collection process is systematic and ongoing. Nursing diagnoses are derived from the assessment data. Assessment and reassessment of homecare needs. On-going assessment and reassessment of infant reporting any changes to Nurse Practitioner or Neonatologist. Establish and update patient plan of care in accordance with established hospital policy to include the following: A plan that is individualized to the patients condition, age or needs. Appropriate interventions are established and effectiveness continually evaluated with modifications when appropriate. A plan that is developed with the patient, significant others, and health care providers, when appropriate. A plan that reflects current nursing practice. A plan that is documented. A plan that prescribes appropriate nursing actions to meet the goals, as well as the physical, psychological, psychosocial, emotional, and social needs of the infant and caregivers. On-going evaluation of goals and patients progress towards their attainment. A plan that provides for continuity of care. A plan that is appropriate to the patients age, developmental age, educational needs, and family/guardian expectations as related to the diagnosis. A plan that, in collaboration with interdisciplinary members of the team, formulates care including expected outcomes for each patient based on diagnoses derived from patient assessments. Demonstrates the ability to organize and set priorities by: The ability to work with people from diverse socio-economical backgrounds. Managing multiple priorities. Adapting to a rapidly changing work environment. Coordinates and participates in providing direct patient care as evidenced by: Nursing care performed in an organized and systematic manner. Ability to organize work and utilize time efficiently, based on knowledge of nursing theories and procedures. Ability to interpret reports, data, and medical information to determine the needs of the infant and family. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions and manage several abstract and concrete variables. Collaborates effectively with Respiratory Therapists, Social Workers, Chaplain Services, and other related departments. Utilizes all equipment in the unit appropriate to patient with maximum efficiency and effectiveness based on knowledge and education. Performs skills proficiently and in accordance with the standards of care to include: Verification of medication administration accuracy by following all safety measures. Managing high risk drugs, confirm appropriateness of medications, and verification of all medications with second staff nurse. Interventions which are implemented in a safe and appropriate manner and documented. Ability to apply knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span to identify infants and family requirements relative to age-specific needs. Provides emotional support, education, and assistance to families related to: Pregnancy Loss Support Group for parents/significant others experiencing grief due to newborn condition at birth, parental separation from newborn, neonatal death or fetal demise. Knowledge and support of the natural mother, adoption agencies, foster parents, and/or adoptive parents of newborn as appropriate. Ensures appropriate documents are obtained before infant is released from hospital. Providing education to the parent/guardian specific to the security, health, and well-being of the neonate. Assessment of the parent/guardians comprehension and ability to perform specific tasks is documented in the medical record. Serves as a mentor and completes the appropriate documentation of training and competency. Teaches, supervises, and serves as a resource person to all staff members Assists transport team in stabilization of infant and provide necessary support and documentation to facilitate the transfer Demonstrates knowledge of individual role in hospital infant abduction plan Demonstrate understanding of HCAs and "Patients First" safety initiative by strict compliance to all safety protocols and procedures Performs other related duties as directed or required Core SDSAMC staff will be required to cross-train and float between Newborn Nursery and NICU
