Summary of Role:

This position will be responsible for managing all aspects of the Quality Assurance function that ranges from quality audits, supplier and internal product qualification, quality sustaining activities and managing validation activities for field quality issues for the residential and commercial business units. Focusing on PV panels plus a variety of products for Balance of Systems (inverters plus other electrical and mechanical products), the successful candidate will lead to establish new procedures and protocols, manage a team of quality engineers and highly matrixed internal cross-functional teams and suppliers to ensure that supplied components will follow new product introduction protocols, improve supplier capability and ensure continuity of supply of high-quality components. In the event of product failures, this position will be responsible in facilitating systematic problem-solving methods to determine root cause and provide feedback on internal and supplier-related corrective actions.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Over-all in-charge for quality program for PV panels and Balance-of-Systems (BOS) products, which include inverters, electrical and mechanical components
  • Lead qualification activities together with internal teams in performing QMS and product audits at supplier factory or internal sites
  • Lead quality and reliability laboratory justification and expansion project
  • Lead part qualification plans (PQP) to ensure intensive qualification of products prior to approval for mass production with an over-all objective of understanding potential product issues triggered by a variety of factors related to internal operations and supplier-caused issues
  • Work with Design and Product Engineering to define critical-to-quality process parameters to be monitored internally and at supplier factories
  • Support NPI and FAI activities to ensure compliance to product and field quality requirements
  • Assess supplier capabilities and ensure alignment to SunPower's on-boarding requirements for new suppliers
  • Review Control Plans, FMEA and Statistical Process Control results to ensure alignment to drawings and/or product specifications; assess viability and soundness of current protocols and drive improvement actions, as necessary
  • Promote problem-solving culture via 8D process; work intensively within the internal organization and with suppliers in defining root causes of failures through 5Why Analysis, DOEs, fault-tree analysis, etc; define corrective action plan and validate effectiveness of such actions in order to prevent recurrence of issues
  • Monitor internal and supplier-related product issues using key performance indicators and drive improvements in product performance, as necessary
  • Serve as key interface for validating chargeable product and design issues escalated from Commercial and Industrial business unit
  • Serve as key point-of-contact for supplier process and product changes, ensure compliance to PCN and ECR/ECO approval protocols
  • Work in a matrixed organization, drive the success of new and existing quality programs and projects and establish policies and procedures, as necessary

    Required Qualifications:
    • B.S. degree in Engineering and 10+ years of related experience or M.S. Degree and 7+ years or Ph.D. 5+ years or equivalent combination of education and years of related experience
    • Intensive experience in high-volume manufacturing or field applications engineering, preferably dealing with PV panels, inverter and/or electronic products; at least 7 years of which as a Quality Manager
    • In-depth experience in Production Part Approval Process (PPAP)
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to communicate, as appropriate, to multiple levels within the organization
    • Intensive experience in PV Panel design and manufacturing process, quality control and reliability qualification protocols
    • Knowledgeable in PV panel components supplier quality
    • Diverse knowledge of multiple manufacturing processes (Surface Mount Technology, semiconductor assembly, electro-mechanical assembly, wiring, etc.)
    • Intensive ability in understanding product drawings, specifications and correlating potential product failure modes to product design and manufacturing processes
    • Proven ability in leading the resolution of complex product failures through 8D problem-solving
    • Familiar with statistical process control and statistical analysis software (JMP, Minitab, etc.)

      Preferred Qualifications:
      • Some experience in solar field construction
      • Knowledgeable in PV Cell design and manufacturing processes
      • ASQ Certified Quality Auditor (CQA)

        Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
        • Able to travel up to 50% of the time
        • Able to visit and audit internal business units and supplier factories domestically and internationally
