The Optum Enterprise Epic Services team is building an innovative, comprehensive Epic services capability using the collective expertise of our clinical, consulting, delivery, technology, and operations teams. Our Center of Excellence, located in Nashville, TN, is bringing together some of the greatest minds in the industry to further our mission of making the health system work better for everyone. This is a Manager-level role responsible for leading, managing and mentoring a team of technical experts and maintaining client and vendor relationships during the implementation and operation of a suite of Epic applications. The role requires planning and coordination of technical and project management activities across a multi-layer architecture. This role will have some responsibility for both technical and report configuration.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Supervise Epic application design, development, support, and other maintenance activities in compliance with IT standards of best practice
  • Provide technical direction, guidance and assistance during project development and obtain all required formal signoffs
  • Determine staffing requirements and supervise the work of all direct reports to ensure effective and efficient group functioning
  • Ensure all team members successfully complete all required job training, including Epic certification, and keep required certifications up to date
  • Establish and maintain relationships with key client stakeholders, Epic and/or other 3rd party vendor representatives
  • Support and hold the project team accountable to the identification, documentation and implementation of operational and technical workflows and best practices
  • Be familiar and stay up to date with regulatory requirements relevant to technical scope
  • Lead Epic upgrade initiatives or enhancements to workflows including the design, build, and test phases
  • Provide technical/clinical workflow consultation including application configuration. Review, analyze, and evaluate systems needs to develop recommendations for customers
  • Develop, support, and maintain all required system design and build documents and other system documentation
  • Provide support of application incidents reported through the help desk, including 24/7 on call coverage as required
  • Adhere to organization standards for system configuration and change control
  • Develop solid relationships with end user communities, customers, and business partners
  • Attend, participate in, and contribute to meetings throughout the facility
  • Troubleshoot and/or resolve application issues and escalate more complex issues as appropriate
  • Identify and confirm Service Level Agreements with clients according to Optum guidelines
  • Foster innovation and coordinate with Epic, internal team, and clients to implement beneficial new functionality, workflow enhancements and upgrades within reasonable timelines
  • Actively listen to project team (through routine meetings, Employee Engagement feedback, 1:1s, etc.) and support their growth according to UnitedHealth Group Human Capital requirements
  • Hold the team accountable to UnitedHealth Group Values and project deliverables. Provide performance feedback on a routine basis according to Human Capital requirements

    Required Qualifications:
    • Bachelor's degree
    • Current Epic Certification in at least two applications, including ECSA, ODBA, Cogito, Clarity, OR other related modules
    • Completed Epic CEE (Continued Epic Education) to maintain certifications, proficiencies, and badges
    • 7+ years combined experience across HealthCare and/or IT domains
    • 5+ years working with Epic applications
    • 2+ years resource management and/or large-scale project management
    • Experience with ticket management systems
    • Proficiency with the Microsoft office suite; Excel, PowerPoint, Project, SharePoint, Teams, Visio, and Word
    • Ability to travel up to 25% of the time

      Preferred Qualifcations:
      • Technical, infrastructure and support experience including with interfaces and interoperability standards (HL7 v2, FHIR, X12, other)
      • Consulting experience with a focus on analyzing and interpreting client needs and creating value through professional product delivery
      • History of growing teams and making others better
      • A history of integrating applications with EHR technologies (preferably with Epic Systems)
      • Familiarity with healthcare and payer workflows and systems
      • Familiarity with HIPAA security and privacy regulations
      • Familiarity with process improvement and software development methodologies (like Agile)
      • Familiarity with reporting tools
      • Proven team leadership, supervision/management, and communication skills
        Key Competencies:
        • Exhibit excellent time management, organizational, and prioritization skills and an ability to balance and fulfill multiple priorities
        • Develop performance improvement initiatives aimed at improving end user service, operating costs, group functions & productivity
        • Lead a team of technical support analysts and report writers who provide advice, solutions, and resolution support to customers on the company's products
        • Adhere to an analytical approach with an ability to solve complex problems
        • In-depth knowledge of Epic EHR and the full implementation lifecycle of Epic's suite of EHR applications
        • History of implementing performance improvement initiatives aimed at improving end user experience, operating costs, group functions & productivity
        • Familiarity with usability concepts and techniques
        • Teamwork and Collaboration. Consultative and collaborative style with demonstrated ability to team with cross-functional teams
        • Excellent in assessing and managing employee satisfaction results and assist leadership in the execution of improvement action plans
        • Demonstrate the ability to build and maintain solid internal relationships as well as motivate and inspire other team members through solid consultative skills
        • Demonstrates a solid ability to build partnerships and influence others. Work across team, group, and business boundaries to drive commonality and reusability in solution to real-world problems
