individuals and foundations, and does not accept funding from

million just four years ago to approximately $42 million in 2022.

Atlantic, CNN, Vox, Forbes, and Marie Claire.Position SummaryThe
Director of Accounting will oversee the day-to-day financial
accounting management of the organization, general ledger activity,
payroll, the month-end closing process, financial reporting, cash
management, and tax compliance. The position reports directly to
the Chief Financial Officer, supervises the accounting team, and
involves significant interaction with the other members of
management. This individual will also be responsible for managing
successful annual financial statements and 401(k) audits conducted
by Upstream's outside auditors as well as any audits required by
our donors. The Director of Accounting will be the in-house expert
on technical accounting issues that apply to Upstream.The ideal
candidate will have experience managing the full accounting cycle,
prioritizing and balancing multiple tasks against their respective
deadlines. They will have a strong attention to detail to maintain
the highest levels of accuracy and completeness in the
organization's financial records. They will have a deep technical
competency in U.S. GAAP, including specific principles for
non-profit accounting, and promote both cross-functional
collaboration and a positive work environment.Essential Duties and
Responsibilities
- Manage the full accounting cycle, ensuring that payments and
accounts payable, billing and accounts receivable, fixed assets,
accruals, and expense allocations are completed timely and
accurately
- Lead, coach, and mentor an accounting team of two direct
reports and manage work allocation, training, problem resolution,
performance evaluation, and the building of an effective team
dynamic
- Manage cash balances to ensure daily needs for cash on hand are
met; review, approve, and release any disbursements of cash
balances
- Oversee the payroll process on a biweekly basis, ensure timely
and accurate payrolls, and maintain compliance with all local,
state, and federal payroll and tax obligations
- Ensure an accurate and timely monthly and year-end close, and
timely reporting of all monthly financial information
- Create monthly financial reports working collaboratively with
the CFO to perform insightful accounting and operational
analyses
- Produce quarterly and annual financial statements and prepare
footnotes for the annual audited statements
- Direct and coordinate the annual financial audit and 401k audit
processes, ensuring timely completed audits
- Oversee the annual preparation of the Form 990 tax form,
coordinating the accounting team in the preparation of the form and
collaborating with tax firm personnel to review the form once it's
completed
- Responsible for the review, design, implementation, and testing
of internal controls over financial reporting and assets; maintain
and adapt internal controls as the organization grows and
changes
- Maintain and adapt organizational expense policies as the
organization grows and changes
- Identify and implement new practices to continually improve
processes for greater efficiency
- Research new accounting pronouncements and establish practices
to maintain organization's compliance with U.S. Generally Accepted
Accounting Principles
- Serve as a valued accounting and operational partner to others
in the organization; contribute to increasing the financial
literacy and business acumen of the organization
- Support the Chief Financial Officer with special projects as
neededRequired Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and
AbilityThe ideal candidate must be able to demonstrate aptitude in
the specified areas below.
- Bachelor's Degree required in Accounting, Finance, Business
Administration or Economics. Masters of Accounting, MBA, or other
advanced degree is highly valued.
- CPA active license required
- 8-10+ years of accounting experience with at least 3 years at
the management level; experience in non-profit accounting and tax
requirements is highly valued
- Evidence of understanding and working knowledge of accounting
and finance theories and practices
- Experience with accounting software systems (Intacct a plus),
payroll systems, expense reporting and bill pay systems
- High proficiency in Microsoft Suite including Excel,
PowerPoint, and Word
- Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, and manage staff
- Excellent analytical, organizational, problem-solving, and
cross-functional collaborations skills
- Understands the big picture, but is also able to step into the
numbers
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment; should be able to
identify departmental needs and take initiative to implement
solutions
- Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and meet
project deadlines
- Possesses excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated
ability to communicate effectively; builds and maintains positive,
productive relationships with colleagues, staff, and partners
