The Role
The Dimensional Quality Engineer role is both a practical and
analytical position. He/she will be responsible for developing
dimensional standards and practices while driving dimensional
improvements across cross-functional teams within the Austin
factory. This includes, but isn't limited to, Gauge and Fixture
design, setup, and qualifications; Gauge Repeatability and
Reproducibility and Correlation/Linearity Studies; Dimensional
Report Creation; Control plan creation; Dimensional Stack Up
Analysis; Statistical Process Control Analyses; and Design Change
Recommendations/proposals. These functions will need review of
manufacturing processes, current build quality, and part/assembly
design to drive improvements across all Tesla models.
Dimensional Quality Systems and Documents will be reviewed and
developed as needed to improve detection methods and out-going
quality. A successful candidate will be able to troubleshoot
various processes to identify potential root cause of quality
issues to prevent future defects from occurring.
The Dimensional Quality Engineer will work closely with
Manufacturing and Quality Engineering Teams to provide reports,
charts, graphs and anything else needed to define, measure,
analyze, improve and control product and process quality from their
respective shops. A successful candidate will be able to work with
internal Dimensional Quality Engineering Technicians to Drive
projects to completion.
The successful candidate must have mechanical aptitude, the ability
to meet tight deadlines, have strong interpersonal and
communication skills, be detail oriented and be able to both take
direction and work independently.
Responsibilities
- Areas: Body-in-White, Stampings, Castings, General
Assembly
- Drive root-causing, containment, and solutions to overall
dimensional fit problems.
- Review part and assembly data using data collection software
(CM4D, Polyworks, Dataloop)
- Dimensional analysis of issues through stack-up analysis (RSS)
at body/vehicle level
- Dimensional validations of parts to meet overall product
quality intent
- Prepare presentations summarizing results, findings, and next
steps
- Communicate between cross-functional teams to drive quality
improvements to completion
- Support with new product launches, continuous improvement, and
troubleshooting related to dimensional quality engineering
responsibilities
- Support in risk assessment & mitigation activities
- Anticipate potential problems and take preventative
action.
- Contribute to 8D/Root Cause Analysis process by
reviewing/auditing and collecting information on manufacturing
processes, design, specifications, quality system, and detection
methods
- Investigate root causes and provide corrective and preventative
actions
- Create and Train on New Documents, Dimensional Quality
Processes, and Detection Methods
- Support Manufacturing Control Plan/PFMEA Creation and
Improvements
- Create and Test New Detection Methods (Gauging, equipment,
methods, etc.)
- Dimensional Control Plan Definition, Execution, and
Implementation
- Create Inspection and Metrology Equipment Instructions
- Conduct Gauge R&R tests on various measuring equipment
- Analyze Gauge R&R data to drive Measurement System
Improvements
- Oversee New Measurement Equipment Validations and Drive new
measurement equipment to meet Tesla Dimensional Standards
- Create Dashboards to Track Dimensional Quality KPIs
- Review Design Requirements and Support with Tolerance
Reviews
- Create Dimensional Reports for Austin Factory Requirements
- B.S. or B.A. in Engineering or related field (Mechanical
Engineering preferred) or equivalent experience
- 2 or more years of experience in a Manufacturing, Quality, or
Process focused role
- Ability to use power tools comfortably
- Mechanical inspection experience using basic and precision
measurement tools
- Ability to read and interpret part and specification
drawings
- Ability to write clear work instructions and inspections
- Ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
- Strong mechanical aptitude and trouble-shooting skills
- Ability to communicate ideas and information clearly and
effectively
- Ability to interpret results and statistics
- Experience with Measurement System Analysis and Statistical
Process Control Analysis preferred
- Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing practices highly desired
- GD&T Experience highly desired
- Ability to use CATIA V5 highly desired
- Experience using CM4D, Polyworks/Dataloop, or Minitab a
plus
- Experience in AQP, MPM, and PPAP
