Job Summary::The Manager of Media Relations is responsible for assisting the Chief Communications Officer in developing and maintaining working relationships with local, state, and national media. Responsibilities also include helping work with ethnic media. The person in this role will assist on working with reporters and editorial staffs at print, broadcast, and social media outlets. This is the first time Southwest Key Programs has designated a position focused on helping develop and maintain working relationships with reporters, editorial staffs, freelancers, media production personnel and related journalists, such as photographers, videographers, and others. The Manager of Media Relations also will assist the Chief Communications Officer in developing and executing plans to gain positive media coverage, mitigate potential negative coverage and assist on a broad range of media relations activities that may include crisis communications, litigation support and serving if needed as a spokesperson for the agency.#SWHQEssential Functions::

  • Serve as a contact for incoming media inquiries.
  • Assist in originating proactive media outreach activities.
  • Help prepare options for media strategies on potential issues, various announcements, and different circumstances.
  • Serve as on on the record spokesperson for some media inquiries.
  • Help prepare news release, media statements, Power Point presentations, speeches, government testimony, video scripts, media kit materials, web copy, community media content, FAQ's, background messaging, and other media materials as needed.
  • Assist in building working relationships with reporters and other news people.
  • Help suggest and prepare for media events and press interviews.
  • Offer ideas and strategy options to the Chief Communications Officer on media related issues.
  • Help the Chief Communications Officer prepare agency staff for potential media interactions, press tours, and interviews and suggests strategies, messages, and tactics for successfully communicating with media.
  • Provide advice and counsel on various media relations matters.
  • Work with the Chief Communications Officer to prepare for a broad range of issues, events and opportunities and help make sure messages are brand consistent and reinforce the mission and core values of the agency.
  • Assist the Chief Communications Officer with other projects, responsibilities and assignments as needed.Other Functions::
    • Assist the Chief Communications Officer with strategic opportunities related to various media and other communications issues that involve agency partners.
    • Work with other members of the communications team on projects that might include the annual report, internal communications, podcasts, videos, branding initiatives, staff presentations, community engagement efforts, media events, special events and other community activities.
    • Monitor mainstream media and social media and analyze coverage trends and potential pitfalls and opportunities.
    • Work independently to oversee multiple projects simultaneously.
    • Work with and help manage outside consultants.
    • Assist Chief Communications Officer on tasks and assignments as requested.Qualifications and Requirements::
      • Degree in journalism or a closely related field strongly preferred. Master's degree is a plus.
      • Strongest candidates will have a minimum of 5+ years of media relations or reporting experience.
      • Experience as a campaign press secretary and/or government PIO is an advantage.
      • Individuals with experience as a working journalist are encouraged to apply and will be given credit for their experience working in the media.
      • Must be a strong writer and be able to demonstrate a track record of working successfully under deadline.
      • Candidates who can demonstrate prior success in dealing simultaneously with multiple projects and being a team player who is agile, nimble, and flexible will warrant additional consideration.
      • Experience working with internet-based publications and mission-driven media outlets is helpful.
      • Experience with internal and external corporate communications and social media, issue management, litigation support and crisis communications is beneficial.
      • Must possess outstanding interpersonal communication skills and an ability to perform under tight deadlines.
      • Highly adaptable self-starter who can work without supervision and has demonstrated persistence and resilience when faced with challenging tasks
        Preferred
