Job Description:

Description Court Reporter (AFC19-0652-W) Bowhead is seeking a Court Reporter to supports its customer in Austin, TX. The Court Reported will work independently with a high level of responsibility to provide short notice, in-person, recording and verbatim transcription of all detailed proceedings, audio, and file types into final form with 99% accuracy of final product, averaging an hour of audio per day (estimated 45-50 pages per day) and meet suspense as dictated and/or agreed upon by participating parties. Upon expressed exception by supervising attorney, Candidate will prepare transcript in summarized form. Candidate must be capable of producing real time draft of transcript upon request during recordings. Candidate must meet short suspense production/completion of transcripts Candidate will provide in person and off site court reporter services, transcription, and other clerk related support at a variety of geographically disbursed locations to assist legal staff and attorneys to include the recording of verbatim and summarized proceedings of various types such as administrative hearings, Federal arbitrations, Merit System Protection Boards (MSPB), Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) arbitration and hearings, U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) hearings, Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) matters, Independent Resolutions Directorate hearings, dispositions, and investigatory hearings by use of closed microphone, open-microphone, and closed-mask methods without interruption except in cases of unintelligible or inaudible speech. Candidate must be familiar with a wide range of subject-matter with specialized legal, acquisition, national security, medical, technical, or otherwise specialized terminology; various speech styles; rapid interchanges between witnesses, counsel, court members, and the judge; overlapping speech; and frequent objections of counsel, arguments on the law, and rulings of the judge. Candidate will use written shorthand, a shorthand machine, or oral stenography to record word-for-word statements; copy and collate material as required; prepare statements to describe evidence such as drugs, charts, or bulky items that cannot be assembled into the record; prepare and type address/index showing page numbers for witnesses' testimony, documents marked for identification, motions, instructions on findings by judge, proper rotations as to attendance of members, swearing-in of members and other participants, challenges, arraignment, motions, pleas, sworn testimony by witness, objections, ratings by judge, and instructions on applicable laws, etc.; record related information necessary for the record such as exact time of convening, recesses or adjournments; account for and properly identify all exhibits and other documents involved in the proceedings; maintain running index of proceedings to include listing of witnesses and marking and listing exhibits; prepare, assemble, and deliver completed/printed volumes of proceeding(s) or investigation(s); review requirements are accomplished; responsible for complete and accurate record of proceedings to include technical terms, grammar, punctuation, spelling, capitalization and format; responsible for photographing non-documentary exhibits for inclusion in the final transcript. Requirements Candidate is required to have advanced knowledge and experience with court reporter technology (FTR Gold and Dragon software); utilize a digital recording system to perform reporter/transcription duties advanced speed dictation proficiency; mark and maintain exhibits; thorough working knowledge of general business and office procedure and of the specific business operations, organization, policies, procedures, files, and workflow; and knowledge in performing stenographic duties and responsible clerical tasks such as maintaining follow-up files; assembling material for reports, memoranda, and letters. Candidate must return all audio, digital files, exhibits, and proceeding/hearing related material to the legal office upon conclusion of each service rendered. Candidate will hold a high school diploma or GED equivalent; be in compliance with state certification exams and other state court reporting requirements; and pass a state and federal criminal history background check. For services rendered in the state of Texas, Candidate will be certified and registered through the Texas Judicial Branch Certification Commission. SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIRED: Must currently hold a security clearance at the Secret level. US Citizenship is a requirement for Secret clearance at this location. If the position requires, an applicant must pass a pre-employment criminal background history check. All post-secondary education listed on the applicant's resume/application may be subject to verification. Where driving may be required or where a rental car must be obtained for business travel purposes, applicants must have a valid driver license for this position and will be subject to verification.
